One of the easiest ways to teach a child to read is to read with them. Read part of a book to them and then let them read a little. Don't push. Make it fun.
Usborne Books has many titles which work at multiple levels. The phonics readers have large easy text for a child to read and slightly smaller words for an adult to flesh out the story. As a child reads more independently they can move on to the more difficult text.
The Illustrated Stories series is made up of age appropriate retellings of classic stories. They work well as read alouds for young children and independent readers for early readers.
